In antique time skin deseases were first to be treated with the use of light. Aurelian recommended treating cough, obesity, arthritis, dropsy,scrofula and rickets with sunlight.

Richard litt an einer Krankheit, die zu seiner Zeit für Lepra gehalten wurde (auch wenn es möglicherweise Syphilis, Skrofulose oder Tuberkulose war), was er offensichtlich verschwieg, als er in Avignon durch den Papst zum Abt ernannt wurde.

Richard suffered from what was then thought to be leprosy (although it might have been scrofula or tuberculosis) which he apparently contracted when he went to have his position as abbot of St Albans Abbey confirmed by the Pope at Avignon.
