State of the Union message

Today's Herald Tribune maintains that, by taking this step, the European Union is now something of a federal state: perhaps it is exaggerating, but the political message is clear.

In der heutigen Ausgabe des Herald Tribune heißt es, daß die Europäische Union mit diesem Schritt nunmehr in gewisser Weise mit einem Bundesstaat zu vergleichen ist. Das mag übertrieben sein, doch die politische Botschaft ist eindeutig.

The Union should be a credible player on the international stage but also a free partner of the United States within the Atlantic Alliance. That is the key message of this report, and that is why I shall support it.

Glaubhafter Akteur auf der internationalen Bühne, aber auch freier Partner der USA innerhalb des Atlantischen Bündnisses, so lautet die entscheidende Botschaft dieses Berichts, den ich aus diesem Grund befürworte.

I hope that Member States have understood one extremely important message: it is not enough to be prepared in your own backyard; the same conditions must be in place across the whole European Union.

Ich hoffe, dass eine ganz besonders wichtige Botschaft bei den Mitgliedstaaten angekommen ist: Es reicht nicht aus, nur für sich allein vorbereitet zu sein; wir brauchen einheitliche Voraussetzungen in der ganzen Europäischen Union.
